Experience leads to inspirational creation

Begović conceptualises his building as a humanised significance: as the power of labour (Exhibition Pavilion), as an intimate home for the naïve artists (Gallery in Hlebine), as a space for like minds (Modern Gallery), as an homage to an artist (Meštrović gallery)...
Academician Andrija Mutnjaković

Acknowledgement for his work on the Meštrović Atelier, which marked his first encounter with the design of museum and gallery spaces, was also the outset of a process of gathering experience culminating in Begović’s doctoral dissertation The development and perspective of art museum architecture, which he defended at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Architecture in 1980. His paper researches the genesis of the social conditions surrounding the creation of museums and their architectural designs in the past as the basis for an understanding of current needs. Begović also considers the crisis of concept in art museums in modern society, suggesting an architectural concept for future art museums. Through his own experience, Begović had come to recognise the importance of planning and creating stimulating conditions for museum design. His years of experience in design and research on the history of museums in relation to modern materials and the available technology resulted in a new, fresh approach to his design of exhibition, presentation, and museum spaces that enriched the local museum scene. His work on issues related to daylighting and artificial lighting—especially in workspaces, galleries, and museums—and his study of the psychological and aesthetic influence of colour were rooted in his time as an assistant at the HAZU Department of Architecture and Urbanism, where he collected and studied documentary materials on the development of modern architecture. Although there is no rule unequivocally determining how a museum should be designed, guidelines certainly exist that should be respected to attain an appropriate result. Begović approached his creation of spaces with the understanding of a high expert in the field, appropriate to the historical context, and with an adequate presentation style regarding both the artwork exhibited and the exhibition space's potential visitors. At a time when our museums are being renovated after the Zagreb earthquake, this part of Begović's opus has taken on the value of documented experience, guidance, and inspiration.
